Eco-friendly yoga clothing: how to choose?

There is a lot of talk about eco-responsibility in fashion in general—but in the yoga world, the reality is often more complex than a simple "green" label. How do you know if a yoga outfit is truly eco-friendly? What criteria should you look at? And why is it worth paying attention to?

Why yoga apparel has an environmental impact

The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. The production of leggings and sportswear is particularly involved: many contain synthetic fibers derived from petroleum (polyester, nylon, elastane), which release microplastics with every wash and take hundreds of years to degrade.

Dressing consciously for yoga practice also means choosing materials that respect the environment—and brands that take responsibility for their production choices.

Eco-friendly materials to prioritize

  • Organic cotton (GOTS): grown without pesticides or GMOs. Gentler on the skin and the environment. Ideal for t-shirts and sweatshirts.
  • Recycled cotton: made from production scraps or used clothing. Reduces water and energy consumption.
  • Recycled polyester (rPET): made from recycled plastic bottles. Less ideal than natural fibers, but much better than virgin polyester.
  • Tencel / lyocell: fiber derived from wood, produced in a closed-loop system. Soft, breathable, and biodegradable.
  • Hemp: requires very little water, naturally resistant to bacteria.

One material that comes up often in eco-discussions: bamboo. We dedicated a full article to it—bamboo clothing: what you really need to know—because the reality is more nuanced than people think.

Labels to know

  • GOTS: the gold standard for organic cotton. Guarantees the entire production chain.
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: guarantees the absence of harmful substances in the fabric.
  • Fair Wear / SA8000: attest to fair working conditions.
  • Bluesign: focuses on water and chemical management in the dyeing process.

Greenwashing in yoga: how to spot it

Many brands use terms like "sustainable" or "eco-friendly" without actually putting in the work. A few warning signs:

  • No mention of the materials used on the website
  • Very low prices that are incompatible with ethical production
  • Huge collections renewed every season
  • No transparency regarding factories or suppliers

Choosing well: leggings, t-shirts, sweatshirts

3 questions to ask before buying a yoga outfit

  1. What is the material? If it's 90% polyester without further detail, be cautious.
  2. Where is it made? A transparent brand states it clearly.
  3. Will it last? An eco-responsible outfit must also be designed to last.

Choosing an ecological yoga outfit is a simple but concrete step toward aligning your practice with your values. And that, in itself, is a form of yoga.
