How to dress for yoga: mistakes to avoid

You don't necessarily think about it before your first yoga class — and then you arrive in running leggings that are too tight, a cotton t-shirt that sticks to you by the second pose, and you spend the session fighting with your outfit. It’s not a disaster, but it is avoidable. Here is what you really need to know to dress well for yoga.

Error #1: Wearing classic running or fitness leggings

Not all leggings are equal when it comes to yoga. Running leggings are designed for linear movement. Yoga requires a much wider range of motion: straddles, deep folds, inversions.

What you need: four-way stretch leggings, and a high or medium waistband that doesn't slide down in downward dog. We wrote a complete guide on how to choose the right yoga leggings. Our women's yoga leggings are specifically designed for this range of motion.

Error #2: The basic cotton t-shirt

Cotton is great for everyday wear. But during yoga, it absorbs sweat without wicking it away, becomes heavy, sticks to the skin, and can ride up in every forward-bending pose. Opt for a yoga t-shirt made of lightweight, fitted organic cotton. Our article your t-shirt will no longer have any secrets for you explains everything about materials.

Error #3: An outfit that is too loose

Oversized yoga wear exists — but it's reserved for yin or restorative yoga. For a dynamic class (vinyasa, ashtanga, hatha), an outfit that is too loose quickly becomes annoying:

  • A t-shirt that is too large falls over your face in downward dog
  • Pants that are too baggy get in the way of single-leg balances
  • The teacher cannot see and correct your posture

Error #4: Forgetting a sports bra (for women)

Inversions and forward folds require appropriate support. A yoga sports bra offers the necessary support without the discomfort of underwire when lying down or twisting. The level of support depends on your body type and the style of yoga practiced.

Error #5: Choosing an outfit with zippers or buttons

This detail seems obvious until you lie down in savasana with a zipper digging into your back. For yoga, prefer outfits without hard or protruding elements.

Error #6: Neglecting eco-responsibility

Yoga is a practice that invites mindfulness. If the subject interests you, we have written a complete guide on eco-friendly yoga clothing and how to choose it without falling for greenwashing.

At YOFE, that is the choice we made: eco-friendly women's yoga clothing and men's yoga clothing that lasts and is designed for the practice.

For men: shorts or leggings?

The question of shorts comes up often. We have detailed the subject in a dedicated article: a pair of shorts for every pose — the guide to choosing between fitted or loose shorts according to your practice.

In summary: what makes a good yoga outfit?

  • Fitted without being compressive
  • Able to follow your movements in all directions
  • Without annoying elements
  • Breathable and comfortable for the entire session
  • Ideally made of eco-friendly materials

And above all: an outfit in which you feel good. Because a yoga session where you don't have to think about your outfit is a much better session.
